My Connection to Cosmo's Midnight

There must be something in the water in Australia, because that country potentially has the highest number of quality producers per capita.

Cosmo's Midnight are shining examples of the diverse, fun, genre-bending music scene in Australia.

Their music is a tasteful medley of electronic, funk, pop, and indie. They have an incredibly wide sound palette that shows their strength as dance producers and traditional instrumentalists.

Composed of two twins (Cosmo and... Patrick), Cosmo's Midnight are among the rare breed of electronic musicians that tour with a live band. They lean on live elements like the funk guitar and real drums more than many of their contemporaries.

Their music also has a groovy sense of joy and fun that a lot of dance producers aren't able to tap in on.

Songs like Walk With Me and Bang My Line have this charming sense of confidence to them.

The little bell melodies and catchy vocal riffs are "cute" in a way that most dance producers would be too scared to try.

I skew a bit more to traditional house and slightly faster BPMs, but for a while, Cosmo's Midnight felt like one of the closest references for my own music.

Combining the groove of a Kaytranada, but leaning towards funk and indie instead of hip hop.

I also had the great joy of meeting Cosmo's Midnight when they visited Toronto. They let me hang out with the band and are just as charming as their music suggests.

Who is Cosmo's Midnight?

Cosmo's Midnight is an Australian electronic music duo formed by twin brothers Cosmo and Patrick Liney in Sydney.

Their music often features bright timbres and idiosyncratic beats, which back collaborations with a variety of artists from pop, indie electronica, rap, and EDM scenes.

The duo first gained recognition in 2012 with their remix of Flume's "Sleepless," which won a remix competition held by Future Classic.

This success led to their debut single "Phantasm," featuring Nicole Millar, and their first EP, Surge. Their debut album, What Comes Next, released in 2018, includes notable collaborations with artists like Winston Surfshirt, Jay Prince, and Tove Styrke.

This album was followed by Yesteryear in 2020, which saw further success and experimentation with a blend of digital and organic sounds.

Some of their important songs include "Walk with Me" featuring Kučka, which was a major hit on Triple J, "History," and "Talk to Me." The duo has also received several nominations and accolades, such as a nomination for Best Dance Release at the 2021 ARIA Music Awards for their album Yesteryear.
