I'm Arial Ten and I wrote this because I've been heavily inspired by Robotaki's music. If you like Robotaki, you might like my warm groovy dance music.
My Connection to Robotaki
Robotaki is what I imagine my music career would look like if I started producing several years earlier and was actually successful.
He is a university educated Asian Canadian who mixes electronic, funk, soul, and house. He is one of the exceptionally rare artists who has an official Daft Punk remix. He's released on ODESZA's label, played EDC, and toured with Madeon/Porter Robinson.
He's like my music producer fan fiction.
Robotaki makes fun, groovy music that layers in guitar, piano, synths. He is an exceptional remixer, seeming to bring the very best out of the source material. His Act of God and I Wish remixes stand out to me.
He's also great at pushing his musical ingenuity. He can dabble in the gentle, the dance-y, the melancholic.
I think his 2020 album The Grand Mirage is a great display of his range. The song Los Angeles capturing a wistful, optimistic feeling in a way that few dance producers can do.
I must've e-mailed or DMed Robotaki several times over the years because he's an excellent role model sonically and seems to have his wits about him.
I actually switched from FL Studio to Ableton because I heard he made the same transition.
On same level, my musical overlap with artists like Robotaki and Pat Lok make me wonder if our output is some product of being Asian-Canadian but growing up with indie and hip hop.
Who is Robotaki?
Robotaki, the moniker of Canadian producer Preston Chin, blends a variety of genres including electronic, disco, funk, and pop.
Born in Toronto and later based in Montreal, Robotaki’s music is heavily influenced by the likes of The Chemical Brothers and Moby, as well as the soundtracks of classic video games like Silent Hill and Super Mario.
He first gained attention with his remixes of K-pop tracks and later with official remixes for artists like Daft Punk, Kavinsky, and The Chainsmokers.
