My Connection to Michelle
I generally don’t engage in the “overrated” and “underrated” discourse when evaluating things I like.
…but MICHELLE is probably the contender for the most underrated music group that I enjoy. Whenever I check their monthly listeners on Spotify, I’m always perplexed how they haven’t yet double or tripled in appeal.
MICHELLE fuses this playful blend of pop, indie, and R&B that is very difficult not to be charmed by.
Consisting of 4 lead singers and 2 producers, MICHELLE is a NYC-based pop group that makes smooth vocal-forward music.
They combine the positivity of an early 2000s girl group with the quirkiness and self-awareness of the Internet era.
MICHELLE is also my de facto “cooking music” artist because they hit that sweet spot of not too serious and not too distracting. MICHELLE has also given me some of my favorite concert experiences, they're terrific performers who have great chemistry with one another.
MICHELLE has a collective charisma that comes across in their social media and branding.
You feel like you’re hanging out at a friend’s place as opposed to the usual distance you get with a lot of musicians.
MICHELLE is also on my shortlist of artists I would love to remix or work with. I genuinely feel like their vocal range would work amazingly with my bass-forward kind of music.
New York neighbor and dance music magician Austin Millz already has a remix with them, which was actually my introduction to MICHELLE.
Who is Michelle?
Michelle is a six-piece indie-pop band from New York City, formed in 2018. The group consists of Sofia D'Angelo, Julian Kaufman, Charlie Kilgore, Layla Ku, Emma Lee, and Jamee Lockard.
Their music blends elements of R&B, electronic, and pop, drawing influences from the city's vibrant music scene.
Their debut album, "Heatwave," received critical praise and set the stage for their continued success. Notable songs include "Sunrise" and "Unbound." They've collaborated with artists like Arlo Parks and CHAI.
The band is recognized for their energetic performances and unique sound, landing them on NME's 2021 Top 100 emerging artists list. Their second album, "After Dinner We Talk Dreams," was released in 2022.
